A shocking incident unfolded at Maharaja Yeshwantrao Hospital (MYH) in Indore as a junior doctor faced immediate suspension following a disturbing video that surfaced over the weekend. The video depicted the doctor continuously slapping a 45-year-old man who was admitted to MYH from Ujjain for the treatment of a broken bone. The patient, who is HIV-infected, had not disclosed his medical condition to the junior doctor or the attendant.

The anger of the junior doctor erupted upon discovering the patient’s HIV infection during the bone treatment. In the video, the doctor can be seen verbally abusing and repeatedly slapping the patient on the stretcher. MYH Superintendent, Dr. Pramendra Thakur, took swift action by suspending the doctor from the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology.

Dr. Sanjay Dixit, the dean of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College, to which MYH is affiliated, promptly formed a three-member committee to investigate the incident. The committee has been instructed to submit a detailed report within three days. The patient’s attendant, who intervened to stop the assault, claimed to have been physically assaulted as well.

This reprehensible incident raises concerns about the ethical treatment of patients and underscores the importance of addressing such behavior within the medical profession. The investigation will shed light on the circumstances surrounding the assault and determine the appropriate actions to be taken against the junior doctor involved.
